Warning: Good Chance It Will Leak! |
I bought this aquarium for my son for his birthday last summer and thought it was great... that is until it started leaking about 4 months after I bought it. Giving the benefit of the doubt, and thinking the leak was a QA issue rather than a design issue, I managed to exchange it for the exact same model.
Well it's been 4 months since I got the new one, and this morning what did I notice? Yup, a leak. The tank was full yesterday and this morning it's 2/3's full, with a pool of water on the table that holds it. Luckily, no damage was done to the floor either time.
I understand there are sometimes manufacturing issues with a product now and then, but when the same leak occurs in the same product after the same length of time, well then, it's just a cruddy product.
Stay away from this aquarium! |

nice starter tank or childs tank |
I have two of these tanks, a 2.5-gallon purple and a 5-gallon teal. The 2.5-gallon I use as a quarantine tank for my saltwater four stripe damselfish. The five-gallon holds 1 male VT betta fish, 1 Cory's catfish, 2 Florida neon tetra's, 1 snail, and 1 cleaner clam. I do not recommend using these tanks for saltwater fish. The filter and lights aren't strong enough. I've been in this hobby a long time so I am able to control the water quality with my 2.5 gallon and since it's a qt tank the fish are not in that tank more than 3 weeks and only 1 fish at a time... also I do not recommend putting as many fish as I have in the 5 gallon tank like I said before the filter and lights aren't strong enough to carry that large of a bio-load, unless you know what your doing and know how to control water quality I would recommend 2-3 fish max depending on their size. Nothing that would grow more than 3" and remember to buy a heater for tropical fish
Good fish examples for the 5-gallon:
- Betta fish (Siamese fighting fish)
- Guppy
- Catfish
- Tetra
- Danio
- Minnows
- Mollies
- Platies
For the 2.5 gallons
-Betta Fish
-1 or 2 SMALL catfish
-4 SMALL tetras
-Minnow
-Danio
-1 Mollie
-1 Platie
FISH I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND FOR EITHER TANK
-Fresh water sharks
-Cichlids
-Sucker mouth catfish
-Large catfish - (redtail cat's can grow bigger than a dog (4 foot 7 inches to be exact)please do NOT ever buy one unless you have a 500 gallon tank or larger with a massive filter!)
-Sword tails
-Plecos
-Rainbow fish
-Loaches
-Killifish
-Hatchets
-Gouramis
-Discus
-Angel

Mini Bow 5 - Good buy for a first tank if you have limited space |
I have a few different "tiny" tanks and the Mini Bow is my favorite. It comes in several different colors so they can fit into most any decor.
They are somewhat limited (by size and filtration) in what can be kept in them. They are suitable for a pair or trio of guppies (as long as you have another tank for any fry that may be born), a trio of killifish, a betta and a possibly a dwarf bristlenose, but nothing much more than that. It is not suitable for goldfish because they get way to large for a tank of this size.
It's nice to be able to buy a "kit" that includes basically everything but the gravel, heater, decorations and fish. It's what I would call a "plug & play" system.
I have to caution buyers that, if they intend to raise baby fish or snails in a tank like this, the filter will need to be replaced with a sponge filter. The filter provided is fine for adult fish and snails, but anything tiny and without much fin-power could easily be sucked onto the bottom of the filter which would end its short life. Having said that, the Mini-Bow 5 is a sweet little tank that just needs a few accompaniments to make a cute home for your little fish.
It's really great for little kids because it comes in cool colors and is pretty self-contained so there aren't a lot of little parts that can be screwed up. Filter cartridges are easy to replace. |
